Exergen TemporalScanner: For my piece of mind

exergen-temporalscanner Exergen TemporalScanner: For my piece of mind

*Update: Congratulations to Shannon, our winner!

As a parent of a young child, I know how important it is to watch for a rising temperature.  When my daughter was just about 5 months old, she became very ill with Rotavirus (severe flu-like symptoms and diarrhea).  We were taking her temperature every half hour to forty-five minutes.  Believe me, when you have a very sick child, like she was, inserting a rectal thermometer into her very tiny and sore little bottom was no picnic.  I wish I would have had a thermometer like this two and a half years ago.

Now with the Exergen TemporalScanner, it’s so easy to check her temperature with just a swipe of her forehead.  Of course I was skeptical at first but in time, found out first-hand that it does work, as we have used it a number of times.  Here is some more information on the scanner:

The TemporalScanner Thermometer is a totally non-invasive system with advanced infrared technology providing maximum ease of use with quick, consistently accurate measurements. Advanced, patented technology measures temperatures with a gentle stroke across the forehead.

The TemporalScanner Thermometer has been clinically tested for accuracy compared to rectal thermometers and temperature sensors inserted in the heart during course of patient treatment and accepted for use in major hospitals, making it the ideal thermometer for use with newborns, infants, children or adults.

The TemporalScanner has patented software, providing arterial heat balance. This unique process determines temperature by accurately measuring the balance between the tissues warming from arterial blood and tissues cooling (warming) caused by heat loss (gain) to the environment.

*The above three paragraphs were taken from the Exergen website.

Anyone with a young child knows how hard it is to get them to agree to have their temperature taken or to take medicine, for that matter.  My husband and I sat down with our little girl and we each used the TemporalScanner on each other, so she could see how easy, quick and painless it was.  Now, she ocassionally asks for us to take her temperature.  :)   I like products that make this job easier!

We’re giving away one EXERGEN TemporalScanner to a ParentSphere reader.  To enter, leave a comment on this post (comment section below) and let us know if you have ever used or seen one of these scanners in use before and what were your inital thoughts on the thermometer?  If you haven’t, that’s ok, you may still enter.  Winner will be chosen randomly.  Last day to enter giveaway is Friday, September 26th.  The winner will be notified via email the morning of the 27th (check your spam folder!) and we will update this post after the winner has been chosen.

  40. No I haven’t seen this type of thermometer.
Over the last few years, taking a temp has come a long way
from using a rectal thermometer. I remember when my son was a baby, (over 30 years ago) I just hated the thought of having to use a rectal thermometer, thats all there was back then.
    Thank goodness for technology.

    By Elizabeth M. on Sep 23, 2008

  148. I’ve never seen one of these before. My initial reaction is if it works it sure would be easier than taking a rectal temp!

By renee on Sep 23, 2008

  149. I have never seen one, but it seems great. It’s so hard to get a sick kid to agree to either a rectal or oral thermometer.

    By Jennifer M on Sep 23, 2008

  150. I’ve never seen anything like this - it sounds so so much easier than a typical thermometer though. Thanks for introducing it to me!

  151. I have never seen one of these before. I think it’s great. Not even my doctor uses this. Would love to win.

  152. Both of my boys have had febrile seizures, so getting a quick and accurate temperature reading is crucial. This would be a wonderful item for our house since I know they work well. My son was in the hospital for 4 days in February after he stopped breathing and they used it constantly to check his fever status. Thanks for the great giveaway!

  153. I would really love to give this a try

  163. Wonderful, needed product! I’ve never seen these before.

By Sheila on Sep 23, 2008

  164. I haven’t ever seen one like this that is just on the forehead. Many years ago we had gone through a couple of the in the ear type, but we found that you had to get them aimed in the ear canal just the right way for them to be accurate. With a wiggly baby or toddler that isn’t always an easy thing to do. This seems like it would be much easier to use and more accurate.

    Thanks!

  165. I’ve seen a thermometer like this one used at my doctor’s office and it looked great. I would love to have this one — unfortunately my kids are prone to ear infections so we take their temperatures a lot!

  173. I’ve seen them used at Whole Foods, walk in coolers, freezers etc.to check the temp. of products.

By Alan Huestis on Sep 23, 2008

  174. I have seen them in use in the children’s hospital that my daughter was in when she had her open heart surgery. I really wanted one them because it is much easier than trying to take it under her arm! I refuse to take her temperature rectally it freaks me out!

  175. These things are phenomenal. Have my temp taken, orally, on a regular basis and would really prefer to have one of these used each time.

By Doug on Sep 24, 2008

  176. I have never seen one of these before. After reading about it, I think every home should have one. When you are sick you don’t want to be bothered and this is a quick way to check temp. without a fuss.

By Stacy on Sep 24, 2008

  177. I’ve never seen these in use, but when we were at Babies R Us, my husband insisted we added it to our baby registry! To win it would be even more fun :)

  178. I vaguely remember having seen one of these, and I’d love to have one. Our ear one doesn’t work because Suzi jerks her head away, and I just refuse to use the rectal one.

  193. I haven’t used a thermometer like this before but I can imagine how much easier it is to use than traditional ones!

Our son had a mild fever a few days ago and taking his temp was a PAIN! Our thermometer is TERRIBLE. It’s one of those that come in the American Red cross safety kits. It’s super slow and jumps all over the place! HELP!

  197. I love the look of this thermometer. We have the kind that goes into the ear canal but it is hard to get a good reading especially on a baby. The Temporal Scanner looks so easy to use and would come in very handy for the whole family.

  214. I have a 4 month old daughter and 2 other young children. This EXERGEN TemporalScanner Thermometer would be a life saver (possibly literally) for us! You are so right in that no child wants to have their temperature taken rectally, and this product takes the fear right out of having to take your child’s temperature. I would love to have this in our home.
